New Main Branch Library Downtown? WTF?
2theadvocate.com: News - Board 'favors' downtown for main library location 07/08/05: "Representatives of the Federation of Greater Baton Rouge Civic Associations gave the board a resolution from their group urging the board to announce its favored location before the vote and asking that the new library be built in the Goodwood area."
i disapprove of this. here are some quotes:

i guess the FGRC doesn't matter beans to the library board. sounds like personal agendas at work to me.
"Supporters of downtown spoke of creating a "monument to learning" that would serve the entire parish."
hmmm....that's interesting considering that downtown BR is on the outer edge of the parish...wouldn't a library in the center of the parish better serve the entire parish? more personal agenda, i guess. only a personal agenda could justify something on the outer edge being optimal for serving the whole area...idiocy!
"Peggy Good of the Historic Spanish Town Association, said revitalization of downtown is gaining momentum. "People are coming downtown to be a part of what's going on. It's becoming the cultural hub of Baton Rouge," she said."
right...that's why the library branch that's already downtown hardly has any visitors now...people are coming downtown because government is forcing them to...the civic association which is representative of a large part of this community voiced their opinion, and it did not involve downtown...i believe Ms. Good can't see the trees because she's stuck in one.
"Architect Chris Remson said it is time for Baton Rouge "to move into the future.""
well, Mr. Remson...if it's time for BR "to move into the future" why are you and others like you forcing us to rebuild the past? yesterday's future is now, and now things have moved away from downtown....it's people who live in that area that initiated this rebuild downtown thing...don't get me wrong...it's a good thing, if the people want it and support it of their own accord, but forcing people into the downtown area by allowing boards to determine where new buildings will be is coercion.
anyway...the new main branch should be near the center of the parish, not on the outer edge...it should be in parts of town that people are already in on a regular basis running errands and doing shopping - that does not happen downtown. downtown is clearly the wrong choice.
dro out.

Joe Average has no reason to go downtown unless he is in trouble or serving on jury duty. A new library there will be totally irrelevant to most library users in the city.
Cops, lawyers and politicians... people who already work there and use the existing downtown library may like it. But nobody else is going to pay for parking just to use a library when any of the other branches have free parking and are easier to get to.
What a waste of resources.
