Excerpt:Wildlife experts will try to rescue eight bottlenose dolphins swept from their aquarium home into the Mississippi Sound by Hurricane Katrina, a federal agency said Wednesday. The dolphins were spotted in the sound off the Mississippi coast Saturday and appeared to be underweight and injured, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Fisheries Service said.
The dolphins in this article lived at the Marine Life Oceanarium in Gulfport, MS. Marine Life was established in 1956, and was currently home to 14 dolphins, 27 sea lions, and 25 exotic birds. Although this landmark institution withstood Hurricane Camille, it was no match for Katrina's 40 foot storm surge and was completely destroyed in the hurricane. The picture at the top shows what it now looks like. To see more picture of the destruction, please visit http://www.dolphinsrus.com/hurricanephotos.php
The second picture, which was taken two weeks before Hurricane Katrina, is of one of the dolphins from Marine Life that I had the fortunate opportunity to play catch with between shows when I visited the facility. It was great fun, and I look forward to going back as soon as it is rebuilt.
