The Girl in the Café

The Girl in the Café (2005) (TV)

i watched this lovely film tonight. it was done by the same guy who did notting hill and love actually. it was a little slow moving, but kept my interest well enough.

i definitely reccommend it. a bit of a chick flick with a strong political message, though, so if those aren't your cup of tea, don't watch it.

House Votes To Curb Patriot Act
FBI's Power to Seize Library Records Would Be Halted
By Mike Allen
Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, June 16, 2005; A01

The House handed President Bush the first defeat in his effort to preserve the broad powers of the USA Patriot Act, voting yesterday to curtail the FBI's ability to seize library and bookstore records for terrorism investigations.

i'm curious to see what actually becomes of the patriot act. in case you missed Penn & Teller's Bullshit about the patriot act, check this link at crooks&liars. there you'll find the full segment from P&T:BS. I found it quite interesting. i personally think, like many others that the patriot act is too broad. i'm very much against anything, especially legislation, that takes ANY of my personal freedoms away. this whole thing about the government snooping into my personal reading list is something i personally consider as a heavy foot on my freedoms (read "privacy"). i'm not sure what the motivation behind the house's "just say no to preserve the patriot act" is, but i'm definitely pleased. sometimes events can occur for the good of the people whether or not the good of the people was the catalyst for action.

Bush Says Downing Street Memo is B.S.

CNN.com - Bush: Iraq war plans memo wrong - Jun 7, 2005

Some quotes from the article:

President George W. Bush said Tuesday that there was "nothing farther from the truth" than allegations in a British government memorandum that his administration had decided to go to war in Iraq months before he took his case to the American people.

The British document -- known as the Downing Street memo since its publication in a British newspaper --says the Bush administration considered an invasion of Iraq to be "inevitable" as early as July 2002 and that "the intelligence and the facts were being fixed around the policy."

British Prime Minister Tony Blair, who met Tuesday with Bush at the White House, told reporters, "The facts were not being fixed in any shape or form at all." Both leaders said they viewed military action as a last resort.

"Somebody said, well, you know, we had made up our mind to use military force to deal with Saddam. There's nothing farther from the truth," Bush said.
